Back to Rhode Island

  • 2 Rehabilitation Way Woburn, MA, 01801 United States (map)

Trent Theroux will be swimming Back to Rhode Island from Montauk NY to Misquamicut Beach in Westerly, RI on September 17, 2022, to raise money for the The Greater Boston Chapter of United Spinal Association aka RISE Above Paralysis (RISE). RISE will use 100% of the funds raised to provide durable medical equipment grants to individuals who have suffered a spinal cord injury to help with their recovery.

This will be the fourth swim Trent has done to benefit RISE. Trent plans to leave Montauk at 7:30 am and hopes to complete the 20-mile swim at approximately 3:00 pm landing at the Misquamicut Beach where he will be greeted by friends, family and members of RISE.

Trent’s previous swims were Back to Block, a 13-mile backstroke only swim from Point Judith, RI to Block Island in 2012; Back to Newport, a 40-mile swim around Aquidneck Island in 2015; and Back to Britain, an English Channel swim attempt in 2018. He has raised over $100,000 for RISE and his goal is to raise $50,000 for the Back to Rhode Island campaign.

RISE Above Paralysis, is comprised of individuals affected by a spinal cord injury or disorders (SCI/D) including family members, loved ones, healthcare associates and many more. From the moment of injury, we offer hope through one-on-one support, understanding, and guidance. No other entity provides this depth of support. We work to Reach, Inspire, Support and Empower (RISE) all those affected by an SCI/D through our Peer Visitation Program. Staff members and trained volunteers, who have successfully navigated post SCI/D life, serve as mentors to help the newly injured, and their families’ to better understand what happened, transition back into the community and meet their goals of leading a fulfilling life.

Trent Theroux is graduate of Providence College, a Vice President of Finance for Thielsch Engineering. Trent was recognized by Sports Illustrated for his record 41-mile swim around Aquidneck Island (Newport, RI). Trent was paralyzed when he was run over by a motorboat in 2002. The propellers severed all the major muscles on the left side of his back and carved out five pieces of his spine.

Trent’s work as a leadership speaker has been highlighted on radio, newspaper, and television and he authored “Fillet to Finish, An Awkward Journey to the Ironman.”

When asked why he takes on these challenging swims, Trent said, “I swim because I got out of the wheelchair. I swim for those who cannot.”
